Houston doesn't get much of a winter, but our clients still love a seasonal change. This fall and winter, the biggest trends are rich, dimensional color and cuts that look polished with very little effort. Here's what I'm seeing in the chair at Kaizen Hair Studio, and how to make each look last through our mild, unpredictable cooler months.
In this article:
"Baked-In" Brunettes
The brunette of the season is deep and dimensional: espresso, dark chocolate and walnut, with tones that look baked into the hair rather than striped on top of it. Instead of obvious highlights, think subtle variation that only shows when the light hits.
Stylist Tip:
Going darker for fall? A gloss over your existing color gives you that rich, reflective finish while keeping the dimension you already have.
Cinnamon Copper and Chestnut Red
Red is softening into warmer, more wearable shades. Cinnamon copper, maple and chestnut red are the most requested, and they flatter a wide range of skin tones.
If you want to try red without a full commitment, start with a cinnamon gloss over a brunette base. See my guide to hair color for your skin tone to find your best shade.
Black Cherry and Deep Burgundy
For a moodier winter look, black cherry is the standout. It reads almost black until the light catches it, then reveals violet and red tones. Deep burgundy is a softer option in the same family.
These shades are striking on brunettes and are a great way to go dramatic without lightening your hair.
Honey and Buttery Beige Blondes
Blondes are staying soft this season. Honey, buttery beige and caramel ribbons around the face add warmth and brightness without lightening your whole head. If you prefer a cooler look, a creamy vanilla blonde is the winter alternative to stark platinum.
Stylist Tip:
Fall is the ideal time to switch to a lower-maintenance blonde. Adding a soft root and a few deeper lowlights extends the time between appointments through the holidays. My complete guide to blonding covers your options.
The Bouncy Bob
The bob isn't going anywhere, but this season it has more body. The bouncy bob is shaped with soft, rounded layers for volume and swing, and the slightly longer, tousled boyfriend bob is an easy-going alternative.
Both are quick to style with a round brush or a few large rollers.
The Soft Shag
The shag is back with a modern, softer update. Face-framing layers and a lightly textured crown give it movement without the choppiness of earlier versions.
It's especially good for wavy and curly hair, and it works with Houston's humidity rather than fighting it.
Cloud and Curtain Bangs
Bangs are a popular way to change your look for the season without losing length. Cloud bangs are soft, airy and slightly rounded, while curtain bangs part in the middle and blend into face-framing layers.
Both grow out easily, so they're a low-risk way to try something new.
Caring for Your Hair Through a Houston Winter
Our winters bring cold fronts, swings in humidity and more time in heated indoor air, all of which can leave hair dry and color dull. My recommendations:
- Add a weekly hair mask to restore moisture, especially for blonde and color-treated hair
- Always use heat protection when blow-drying and hot-tool styling more often
- Book a gloss between color appointments to keep rich fall shades glossy
- Ask about a Kerasilk treatment for smoother, more manageable hair through the season

This fall and winter is about depth, warmth and effortless polish. Whether you want a rich baked-in brunette, a cinnamon copper or a bouncy new bob, there's a trend that fits your style.
